Janine Allis-Smith CORE Cumbrians Opposed to a Radioactive Environment
Message to DublinMany of us in Cumbria will be with you and both flotillas in Dublin and Cherbourgh, in thought and spirit. Over the last few years the world has become a scary and more dangerous place. We can no longer think of global terrorism, the threat to us and our children from biological weapons or dirty nuclear bombs. in the terms of ‘if’ or ‘maybe’. These days it is more a case of ‘when’ and ‘where’. I’m sure we all question the sanity of our governments in sanctioning these plutonium shipments across the Atlantic not only because the ships travel oceans battered by hurricanes as well as the world’s busiest and most dangerous shipping lanes, but also because they could well become a terrorist target. A plutonium release on that scale would be too horrendous to imagine. We’ve seen the health effects of radiation as a result of Sellafield’s discharges both in Cumbria and on the East coast of Ireland and hoped that we could look forward to a cleaner and safer environment for our children once Sellafield reprocessing comes to an end within the next decade. But it looks as if our fight will have to go on. WE HAVE TO STOP THESE PLUTONIUM SHIPMENTS. A UK government report due out later this month will admit that plutonium, inhaled or ingested, could be hundreds of times more dangerous than previously thought. So let Dublin as well as the rest of the world hear your protest, bless all of you and your flotilla, we’ll be sailing with you in spirit.
